It didn’t take long for Ken Livingstone to try and make political capital out of the rioting that broke out in Tottenham on Saturday night. He issued an official statement yesterday blaming Margaret Thatcher, Boris Johnson and, yes, the cuts – anyone but the rioters themselves. Here’s the key paragraph:

[The] cuts being imposed by the Tory government inevitably create social division. As when Margaret Thatcher imposed such policies during her recessions this creates the threat of people losing control … and culminating in events of the type we saw in Tottenham.
